What Is Fascial Manipulation?

A clear, practical place to start if you’ve heard the term but aren’t sure what it actually involves.

Fascial Manipulation® is a manual therapy method developed by Italian physiotherapist Luigi Stecco and advanced through the research of Professor Carla and Assistant Professor Antonio Stecco. Fascia — the connective tissue wrapping every muscle, bone, nerve and organ — was long overlooked, yet it can generate pain, drives motor control and coordination, and provides the structural link through which force transmits beyond tendon and bone. When fascia loses its ability to glide (densification), often after injury, surgery or repetitive strain, it can pull on distant structures and create pain far from its true source.

Rather than chasing the site of pain, Fascial Manipulation maps the body’s fascial network to locate the densified points actually driving the problem, then treats them to restore free, coordinated movement. It’s more than a technique — because fascia structurally links the whole body, it gives clinicians a framework for connecting a patient’s current symptoms to their movement history, including old injuries, surgeries and compensations.

A practitioner assesses movement and history, identifies the key points driving the dysfunction, and applies focused manual pressure to resolve the underlying restriction — not just relieve symptoms. It’s a structured, repeatable framework, which is exactly why it’s teachable as a certified method.

Key Terms, Plain English

The language of the method

Fascia
The body-wide connective tissue network that surrounds and connects everything inside you.
Densification
A localised change in the loose connective tissue of the fascia that reduces its ability to glide — a key target in treatment.
Centres of Coordination (CC)
Specific points where muscular force converges. Linked longitudinally, the CCs make up the fascial sequences and planes; the main assessment and treatment points in Level 1.
Centres of Fusion (CF)
Points governing diagonal and spiral movements of the body — a reflection of the refined and complex movement of humans; the focus of Level 2.

“Without an understanding of fascia, our picture of the human body is incomplete — much of the pain and dysfunction we see in clinic actually asks us to look away from the symptomatic area.”

How a Treatment Works

Three Steps, One Clear Framework

1

Assess

A movement and history assessment builds a picture of how past injuries and patterns connect to your current symptoms — looking well beyond the painful area itself.

2

Locate

Through precise palpation, the practitioner identifies the fascial points that have densified and are driving the dysfunction, forming a clear treatment hypothesis.

3

Treat & Restore

Focused manual pressure on those points restores the fascia’s ability to glide — easing pain and returning free, coordinated movement across the system.

The Method & Its Science

Built on Decades of Research

Fascia has often been treated as something vague and hard to define, and many manual methods lack a scientific foundation. Fascial Manipulation is different: it builds on the pillars of fascial research — led worldwide by Professor Carla Stecco — that have revolutionised our understanding of the body over the past 20 years. Created by Italian physiotherapist Luigi Stecco and developed over 40+ years, it now rests on one of the strongest evidence bases in manual therapy.

What Clinicians Say

Trusted by Physios, Osteos & Chiropractors

I recently completed Level 2 with Jack Williams in Melbourne. The 15 hours of pre-course webinars delivered by Carla and Antonio Stecco themselves were worth “the price of admission alone”. Jack is adept, confident and approachable, with a profound understanding of the material. Fascial Manipulation has added another dimension to my clinical skill-set — I’m already looking forward to Levels 3 and 4.

Alison SlaterAlison SlaterPhysiotherapist

I’ve completed Level 1, am close to finishing Level 2, and plan to continue to Levels 3 and 4. Of all the fascial approaches I’ve trained in, this is the one that’s most reshaped how I work — it’s far more systematic and precise than what I’d learned previously. Jack is an exceptional instructor, with clear teaching and post-course catch-ups between modules. I strongly recommend it to any manual therapist wanting a more precise, effective and holistic practice.

Simon RobinsonSimon RobinsonOsteopath

The Fascial Manipulation Level 1 course was exceptionally well-structured and provided a strong foundation in assessing and treating the myofascial system, with a particular focus on the deep fascia. The skills I gained have been highly applicable in a sports and musculoskeletal clinical setting, deepening my understanding of how the fascial system relates to both acute and chronic presentations. I would highly recommend it to practitioners wanting to advance their clinical skills and understand how previous injuries influence the body’s coordination and function.

Victor LiVictor LiPhysiotherapist

My studies in Fascial Manipulation by the Stecco group have been nothing short of transformative for both my clinical practice and conceptual framework. The method rests on an exceptionally robust foundation, supported by a continually evolving body of research spanning fascial anatomy, physiology and clinical trials. It has forced me to reconsider concepts central to musculoskeletal management — motor control, pain science, and the role of connective tissue in force transmission.

  • Form clear, testable treatment hypotheses with confidence
Your Learning Pathway

From Curious to Certified

You don’t need prior fascia training to begin. Here’s how Fascial Manipulation progresses.

Part 1 · Musculoskeletal Model
Level 1

Centres of Coordination & the myofascial sequences.

Level 2

Centres of Fusion — diagonals & spirals of complex movement.

Part 2 · Internal Dysfunction Model
Level 3

Internal fascia — organ-fascial units & global biomechanics.

Level 4

Superficial & systemic fascia — external & internal systems.

Certification

Sit the examination to become a Certified Fascial Manipulation Practitioner.

Each level builds on the last. The levels are designed to be completed in order: Levels 3 and 4 rely directly on the assessment and palpation skills developed in Levels 1 and 2. Even if internal dysfunction is your main interest, you’ll need the musculoskeletal foundation first — which is why Level 1 is the starting point for everyone.

Common Questions

Everything You Might Be Wondering

Do I need any prior experience with fascia work?

No. The Introductory Workshop assumes no background in fascial techniques, and Level 1 starts from the foundations. You’ll need to be a manual therapist or a final-year student in physiotherapy, osteopathy or chiropractic, but no fascia-specific training is required to begin.

What’s the difference between the Workshop and Level 1?

The Introductory Workshop is a one-day overview that helps you decide whether the method is right for you — it’s not a prerequisite. Level 1 is the full certificate course: three days of in-person practical plus the equivalent of three days of online lectures delivered by the Steccos, with a textbook and revision workshop included.

How is Fascial Manipulation different from massage or dry needling?

Massage and dry needling generally treat where it hurts. Fascial Manipulation uses a structured assessment to trace pain back to specific fascial points that may be nowhere near the symptom, then treats those points directly. It’s a diagnostic framework as much as a treatment technique.

Is the method evidence-based?

Fascial Manipulation rests on detailed anatomical research into the fascial system and is supported by a growing body of published literature, much of it driven by Carla and Antonio Stecco. The courses combine that scientific grounding with extensive hands-on practical work.

How is Fascial Manipulation different from other fascial techniques?

Many fascial approaches work broadly or only where symptoms appear. Fascial Manipulation is set apart by its specificity and its evidence base: it uses a detailed biomechanical model to identify precise points — Centres of Coordination and Centres of Fusion — that are often distant from the pain, underpinned by the anatomical research of the Stecco group. Rather than general release work, it’s a structured assessment-and-treatment framework with a clear rationale for where you treat and why.

Do I need to complete the levels in order?

Yes. The levels are sequential — each builds on the skills, particularly palpation, developed in the one before. Level 1 is the entry point for everyone, and Levels 3 and 4 assume the musculoskeletal foundation from Levels 1 and 2. You can’t start at Level 3 even if internal dysfunction is your main interest.

What actually happens during a course?

You’ll complete online lectures covering the theory, then attend in-person practical days focused on palpation, assessment and treatment. Groups are kept small so you get supervised practice time. Most levels also include a follow-up revision workshop to consolidate what you’ve learned.

Where are the courses held?

All Melbourne workshops and courses run at 168 Hoddle Street, Abbotsford, Victoria, with selected workshops and courses also offered in other Australian cities. Check the course dates above, or get in touch for upcoming locations.
